Born in 1932 in Mohokuma of Pabna, Joynal joined the language movement when he was a student at Pabna Edward College. He completed an MA degree in law and international relations from Dhaka University.
He worked as a metropolitan magistrate and retired in 1992. After his retirement, Joynal worked with several social organizations including Transparency International Bangladesh and Sanak.
Joynal Abedin also spent time in jail over political issues.
Joynal Abedin Khan, a language movement hero and also a freedom fighter, passed away early today at a hospital in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka. He was 80.
He had been suffering from old-age complications, our Savar correspondent reports quoting Joynal’s family members.
