Chayaghatok is Masud Rana number 463, another instalment in Qazi Anwar Hussain’s long-running thriller series that has been a cornerstone of Bengali popular fiction since 1966. Masud Rana, the agent of Bangladesh Counter Intelligence, has carried readers through hundreds of missions, and the series has endured precisely because it understood from the start what readers wanted: pace, exotic locations, sharp dialogue, and a hero who was both lethal and likeable.

The Masud Rana books are loose Bengali adaptations of international thrillers, and they helped popularise the spy-fiction genre in Bangladesh long before such books were widely available in translation. Qazi Anwar Hussain has, over the decades, transformed his source material substantially, giving the books a Bengali sensibility that the originals could not have had.

Chayaghatok is best read as part of the late series — a confident, well-paced thriller for readers who know what to expect from Masud Rana and want exactly that.
