The narrator is telling this to one particular listener, and the identity of that listener changes the book. Fletcher writes for children under another name and has worked in film, and this was the first book under these initials. It is short, it is about loyalty rather than survival technique, and the dog is in real danger throughout, which readers should know before they start.
