Irvine Welsh is a writer of short stories and novels from Scotland. His busy and influential literary career has had a lasting impact on modern literature.  "Trainspotting," his 1993 debut novel, shot him to prominence. This grim piece, which takes place in the middle of the 1980s, uses a collection of disconnected, non-linear short stories to show characters who are unable to get past their heroin addiction, failing friendships, and their frantic attempts to escape the harsh reality of living in social housing projects. Irvine Welsh has created art in mediums other than novels. He has directed a few short films and authored screenplays and plays. He continues to have a big influence on critical debate and popular culture.
