Prothom Alo 01 Book  Review

Prothom Alo 01 is a popular novel written by Sunil Gangopadhyay. I wonder how a man can write a book of this vividness and liveliness. This is I will say, a feast of history, a journey with eminent figures of Indian Renaissance covering a timeline from 1883 to 1907. It starts from the royal palace of Tripura and expands its storyline from the politics to poetry, physical love to spirituality, with Bharat and Bhumisuta as its primary protagonists. But is the book has only these two protagonists, a really long range of names comes? Tagore, Vivekananda, Gandhi, Gokhale, Tilak, Girish Ghosh, Arabindo all the most talked-about names are present.

In the flow, many sensitive issues come and go making India more mature, bolder. The birth of the Congress to the rise of the rebels everything is discussed here vividly but it is never history but it is a saga of a country. And who is its hero? None of the protagonists but TIME. As the title it is really the “first light”, the light of consciousness to make a country a better place. Hats off Sunil.
