Elin Hilderbrand’s historical novel “Summer of ’69” is set in the turbulent summer of 1969. The Levin family, who spend their summers at their grandmother’s Nantucket cottage every year, is the subject of the story. However, everything changes this year: Tiger, the only son, is deployed to Vietnam; Blair, the oldest sister, is stuck in Boston due to her pregnancy with twins; Kirby, the middle sister,
becomes embroiled in civil rights protests and accepts a summer job on Martha’s Vineyard; and Jessie, the youngest, feels alone. The family goes through personal changes as the summer progresses, all set against the backdrop of momentous historical occurrences.
