Dee Brown
📚 1 Book ✍️ American History 📄 PDF & EPUB

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee took the standard American account of the western frontier and turned it round to face the other way. Dee Brown built it from council records, treaty texts and the testimony of Native leaders themselves, so that the removals, the broken agreements and the campaigns of 1860 to 1890 are narrated from the side that lost, and it closes at Wounded Knee Creek in December 1890, where soldiers of the Seventh Cavalry killed some three hundred Lakota, most of them unarmed. Holt published it in 1970. It sold in enormous numbers, went into dozens of languages and changed what general readers thought they knew. Brown was a librarian by profession, at the Department of Agriculture and then at Illinois, and wrote around thirty books, fiction and history both. Born in Louisiana in 1908 and raised in Arkansas, he died at Little Rock in 2002, aged 94.
