Author: John Stevens Cabot Abbott
John Stevens Cabot Abbott served as a Congregational minister before becoming a prolific American writer of popular history, biography, and moral instruction. After leaving regular pastoral work, he devoted much of his time to books intended to make historical lives accessible to general readers. His compact biographies circulated in sets later known as Makers of History. Hortense Makers of History Series, Louis Philipp, Louis XIV. Makers of History Series, Madame Roland, Makers of History, and Napoleon Bonaparte represent his sustained interest in France. Christopher Carson and David Crockett turn toward American frontier figures, while The Adventures of the Chevalier De La Salle and His Companions recounts exploration. The Child at Home belongs to Abbott's instructional writing for families. His methods were openly narrative and strongly opinionated, qualities that helped his books attract readers while separating them from modern academic history. He also worked with his brother Jacob Abbott on educational publishing projects in New York.
