Desirea’s Escape
L.A. Hilden writes regency romance with the standard ingredients of the subgenre, and Desirea’s Escape opens on the well-worn premise of a heroine running from a marriage she didn’t choose. She ends up in the path of a man who has his own reasons to be moving through the countryside in disguise, and the rest follows the lines you’d expect.
Hilden is comfortable with the period detail. The dresses, the servants, the carriage rides, the rules of address. The dialogue tries hard to sound period-appropriate without becoming impenetrable.
The romance carries the book. The plot mechanics around the escape feel less fresh, but the genre has been around long enough that originality isn’t really what readers come for.
Fans of Mary Balogh or Eloisa James will find a similar register, though Hilden’s books sit closer to the lighter end of the genre.
