Forbidden Fruit

Betty DeRamus’s book “Forbidden Fruit” is an intriguing collection of mainly unreported stories about common men and women who braved gunfire, bloodhounds, mobs, and bounty hunters to be together. These stories of love resist a system that treated Black people as property as well as servants. All of the stories honor hope, passion, courage, and the triumph of the human spirit even though not all of them have happy endings.
