Cat Phoenix’s second novel in the “Fighting” series is titled “Lying.” The protagonist of the tale is August, a professional liar who works in private security. To shield an innocent woman from her abusive ex in a suburban area, her most recent mission requires her to pretend to be married to Spencer, her best friend.

But when Spencer admits to having feelings for August, things become murky and turn into a lie-and-emotion war. The novel finishes on a suspenseful note, laying the groundwork for the “Confessing” sequel.
