The Second Guard

J.D. Vaughn’s “The Second Guard” is a fascinating work of fantasy literature. Every fifteen-year-old second-born child in the tranquil kingdom of Tequende had to travel to the Alcazar. There, they carry out the Oath of Guilds’ directive by becoming indentured servants or preparing to join the fabled Second Guard of the Queen.

To become a member of the esteemed Second Guard, Sun Guilder Talimendra of the Magda River Traders must outcompete hundreds of other pledges. Her allegiance is put to the test, though, when she learns of a secret that might spark a full-scale conflict.
