Tolkien, was published posthumously in 1977 by his son Christopher Tolkien, with the help of fantasy writer Guy Gavriel Kay. The book recounts the history of the universe of Arda, from its inception to the conclusion of the Third Age.

The book draws inspiration from various sources, including the Finnish epic Kalevala, Greek mythology in the form of the lost island of Atlantis (represented by Númenor) and the Olympian gods (embodied by the Valar, though these also resemble the Norse Æsir). Despite receiving mixed reviews initially, “The Silmarillion” achieved commercial success and has since been acknowledged as a seminal work in the high fantasy genre.
