The Weight of Magic

The first book in the “Restriction” series is “The Weight of Magic,” written by D.K. Holmberg. The main character Torian Ranth wants to become proficient in sahir magic. He has trained for years, yet he still finds it difficult to reliably construct even his basic patterns. His time at school ends as a result of his ongoing shortcomings. Torian flees as a neighboring nation attacks his town and the trained sahir are taken prisoner. He meets a mysterious man who understands an old power that hasn’t been seen in generations and exhibits power stronger than any of his professors. Torian has to learn the secret of his power since it might hold the key to stopping a bigger conflict. This is a fantasy about a coming-of-age magic academy with a weak to strong power progression.
