Christopher Paul Curtis’ historical fiction book “The Mighty Miss Malone” is set in the Great Depression. The story follows Deza Malone, the most intelligent girl in her class, and her family as they look for their father, who moved away to look for work. After all, the family settles in Hooverville outside of Flint, MI. While Deza and her mother find a new home and cling to the prospect of seeing their father again, Jimmie, Deza’s brother, departs the camp to pursue a career as a singer. The tale offers proof of the human spirit’s tenacity in the face of difficulty.
