A Round Of Visits

Henry James’s fascinating story “A Round of Visits” looks into the complexities of contemporary existence and affluence in the rapidly expanding mega-city of New York. Following a difficult time, the main character Mark Monteith, returns to the city after being duped by a close friend. The city which is portrayed as being cold and unfriendly with an influenza outbreak and streets that are an odd blend of deserted space and squealing automobiles provides the setting for Monteith’s quest for self-awareness.

After seeing many people from his past Monteith learns that his life is not the only one going through difficulties. The book explores deeply the psychological states and social interactions of its characters frequently presenting them in a way that juxtaposes or overlays unclear or contradictory intentions and feelings.
