A C H Smith is a novelist, playwright, and poet whose best-known novelization is The Dark Crystal. He adapted Jim Henson and Frank Oz's 1982 fantasy film into prose after discussing the manuscript with Henson and visiting the production at Elstree Studios. A 2014 Archaia hardcover paired Smith's narrative with Jim Henson's draft notes and previously unpublished concept work by illustrator Brian Froud. Smith's wider career includes original novels, nonfiction, poetry, and stage writing, as well as another Henson novelization, Labyrinth. That range helps explain why his version of Thra works as a novel rather than a scene-by-scene transcription.
