Alexander von Humboldt

Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a Prussian naturalist and explorer whose expeditions through South America transformed geography, botany, and climatology. A tireless observer and synthesizer, he influenced Darwin and a generation of scientists, and lent his name to currents, mountains, and species around the world.
