Alfred Coppel

Alfred Coppel built a long career across science fiction, aviation, political suspense, and historical adventure, working in both novels and short stories. The Peacemaker belongs to his later fiction, where international rivalry and military technology provide pressure for individual decisions. Turnover Point draws on motor racing, a subject Coppel understood through his enthusiasm for fast cars and flight. He served as a fighter pilot during the Second World War before publishing stories in magazines associated with mid-century speculative fiction. Coppel also wrote under the names Robert Cham Gilman and A. C. Marin, allowing different parts of his body of work to develop distinct identities. His better-known books include Thirty-Four East, The Burning Mountain, The Apocalypse Brigade, and the Rhada sequence. The Peacemaker and Turnover Point demonstrate the breadth behind that bibliography: one turns toward geopolitical danger, while the other organizes its action around competition, machinery, and personal risk.
