Alfred Kingston built a career in English local history, reconstructing national change through records from Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, and the town of Royston. Fragments of Two Centuries appeared in 1893 under the expanded subtitle Glimpses of Country Life when George III. was King. It draws on newspapers, parish material, local recollection, and demographic evidence to describe travel, inns, clubs, punishments, rural labour, war, and social custom. Kingston also wrote Hertfordshire during the Great Civil War, extending his interest in how large political events were experienced in particular counties and communities. Fragments of Two Centuries explains that its local evidence is meant to illuminate conditions shared across rural England, rather than provide a general history of Royston alone. The book’s appendix traces population changes across forty-five parishes from 1801 to 1891, linking its narrative sketches to measurable transformation. Kingston’s method gives ordinary institutions and habits a place beside kings, wars, and parliamentary events.
