Me (Moth) is a novel written in verse, and it was a National Book Award finalist in 2021, the year Amber McBride published it as her first book. Moth has lost her family in a road accident; Sani, the Navajo boy she meets, is coming apart more quietly; they drive west together, and the Hoodoo her grandfather practised travels with them. The book took the Coretta Scott King Book Awards' John Steptoe New Talent Award the following year. McBride holds a degree in English from James Madison University and an MFA in poetry from Emerson College, and teaches poetry and English at Virginia. She has since produced We Are All So Good at Smiling, the middle grade novel Gone Wolf, which won a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the poetry collection Thick With Trouble.
