Anngela Schroeder
Anngela Schroeder revisits the characters and social possibilities of Pride and Prejudice through Austenesque fiction. An Unexpected Merry Gentleman brings Bingley and Darcy back to Netherfield after winter weather interrupts their journey north. The Gardiners and Bennets join the Christmas gathering, allowing Elizabeth to watch Darcy with his sister and her young cousins while he confronts how firmly she has judged him. Released in 2018, this novella uses an enclosed holiday visit to revise first impressions through conversation, family games, and shared recollections. Its chapter titles borrow from the carol God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, reinforcing the seasonal design. Schroeder has written other variations on Austen's novel, and this one preserves recognizable relationships while changing the circumstance around them. The altered setting gives familiar characters room to display patience, warmth, and vulnerability that the original courtship had not yet made visible to one another.
