Antanas Šileika
Antanas Šileika is a Lithuanian Canadian novelist, memoirist, and critic whose books repeatedly return to migration, memory, and Lithuania’s twentieth-century history. Underground follows Lukas Petronis as he joins armed resistance to Soviet occupation after 1945. His military commitment, marriage to Elena, movement through hidden forest bunkers, and later efforts to obtain foreign support turn the novel into both a love story and a political thriller. Thomas Allen & Son published Underground in 2011. Šileika based Lukas partly on partisan Juozas Lukša and drew on family history, archival research, travel, and conversations with surviving members of the resistance. The Lithuanian Writers’ Union records the novel among a body of work that also includes Buying on Time, Woman in Bronze, and Provisionally Yours. Underground uses spare action and intimate loyalties to show how occupation alters education, family, public identity, and private choice. Its historical scale remains grounded in people deciding what sacrifice a national cause can demand.
