Arthur Acheson was an independent Shakespeare scholar who tried to reconstruct the dramatist’s poorly documented early career through literary and theatrical evidence. Shakespeare’s Lost Years in London presents his argument about the period from 1586 to 1592, linking Shakespeare to patrons, rival writers, and acting companies active in the capital. Acheson examined figures including the Earl of Southampton and John Florio, and he used parallels among plays, poems, and contemporary publications to support a detailed chronology. His conclusions remain interpretive rather than settled biography, but the book records an ambitious early twentieth-century effort to reason across gaps in the surviving archive. Acheson also wrote on Shakespeare and the rival poet of the sonnets, and on the relationship between Shakespeare and the Earl of Pembroke. Shakespeare’s Lost Years in London is most useful when read as a historically situated scholarly case, showing which clues Acheson valued and how he assembled them into a narrative.
