Audrey Driscoll
Audrey Driscoll reimagines Herbert West, the scientist introduced by H. P. Lovecraft, as a character capable of change across a longer life. The Friendship of Mortals begins her four-volume Herbert West sequence and establishes the relationships and decisions that reshape him. Driscoll started working on it during 2000 because she wanted West to possess a life story beyond his original appearance. Later volumes follow him under the name Francis Dexter through travel, friendship, loss, and moral transformation. The Friendship of Mortals opens a sustained conversation with an earlier literary creation, yet its emphasis falls on character rather than imitation. Driscoll lives in Victoria, British Columbia, and has also published She Who Comes Forth and Tales from the Annexe alongside the central sequence. Her first Herbert West volume will interest readers who enjoy alternate literary histories built through human connection and gradual change.
