George Pierce Baker ran a playwriting class at Harvard from 1905 and turned it into the 47 Workshop in 1912, named after the course number, where scripts by students were actually staged instead of only marked. Eugene O'Neill sat in it, so did Thomas Wolfe, Philip Barry, Sidney Howard and S. N. Behrman. Modern American Plays, which he edited in 1920, is his anthology of the new native drama he had spent fifteen years arguing was possible. Harvard would not build him a theatre, so in 1925 he took the Harkness money and went to Yale to found its Department of Drama, staying until 1933. He lived from 1866 to 1935 and signed himself George P. Baker.
