J.M. Westgate
J.M. Westgate was the publishing name of John Minton Westgate, an American agronomist whose United States Department of Agriculture work focused especially on forage legumes and crop adaptation. YELLOW TREFOIL OR BLACK MEDIC, Sulla, RED CLOVER, DROUGHT-RESISTANT ALFALFAS, COLD-RESISTANT ALFALFAS, and BUR CLOVER belong to a practical group of USDA bulletins explaining the identification, cultivation, regional value, and limits of particular forage plants. Westgate also wrote Crimson Clover: Growing the Crop and published scientific work on the hardiness of Grimm alfalfa. His guides distinguish species that farmers might otherwise group together and connect plant traits with climate, soil, winter survival, moisture, seed production, and use as hay or pasture. The repeated attention to alfalfa and clovers reflects a period when federal agricultural specialists were evaluating imported varieties and promoting legumes for livestock feed and soil improvement. Across these six publications, Westgate translates experimental and field knowledge into crop-specific advice for growers rather than presenting botany as an abstract classification system.
