Bich Minh Nguyen, who also publishes as Beth Nguyen, is a Vietnamese American novelist and memoirist whose work examines migration, family, literature, and belonging. She teaches literature and creative writing and has written the memoir Stealing Buddha’s Dinner and the novel Short Girls, which received an American Book Award. Pioneer Girl combines those recurring interests with a literary mystery connected to Laura Ingalls Wilder. Its protagonist, Lee Lien, returns to her family’s Chicago restaurant after completing a doctorate and begins tracing a gold brooch that may connect her Vietnamese family history to Wilder’s daughter, Rose. Viking issued the book in 2014, and Penguin later released the paperback. Nguyen uses Lee’s investigation to bring questions of authorship, inheritance, American identity, and mother-daughter conflict into conversation with the Little House tradition. Pioneer Girl therefore links an immigrant family narrative to an inquiry about how national literary stories are preserved, claimed, and reimagined across generations.
