Brian Nelson
Brian Nelson draws on international relations, economics, and political history in both novels and nonfiction. A former Fulbright Scholar, he first gained wide notice for The Silence and the Scorpion, an account of the 2002 coup against Hugo Chávez in Venezuela. He later turned to speculative thrillers with The Last Sword Maker, the opening volume of the Course of Empire series. Five Tribes continues that sequence, combining geopolitical suspense with near-future biotechnology and military competition. Blackstone Publishing released the novel in 2021, with Bradford Hastings narrating the audio edition. Nelson’s academic background and years in Venezuela give his fiction an unusual interest in institutions, state power, and the unintended effects of advanced technology. His essays and shorter work have appeared in the Virginia Quarterly Review, Christian Science Monitor, and Southern Humanities Review. Across nonfiction and fiction, he treats political systems as lived environments shaped by individual ambition, technical change, and imperfect information.
