Caleb Huse
Caleb Huse was a West Point graduate, military instructor, and purchasing agent whose memoir records the logistical work he performed in Europe during the American Civil War. The Supplies for the Confederate Army describes how he sought equipment, negotiated contracts, arranged payment, and worked around the commercial and maritime obstacles facing the Confederacy. Published in Boston in 1904, its fuller title adds How They Were Obtained in Europe and How Paid For, followed by Personal Reminiscences and Unpublished History. Huse had taught chemistry, mineralogy, and geology at West Point before joining the University of Alabama, where he helped establish a military system. In 1861 he was sent abroad to secure arms and other material, giving him direct knowledge of the transactions later described in the book. After the conflict, he returned to the United States and operated a preparatory school for future West Point candidates. His compact account is valuable as a participant's explanation of procurement, credit, shipping, and administration rather than as a record of campaigns or battlefield events.
