Charles Ives created experimental American music by joining together hymn tunes, marches, popular songs, and dissonant modernism. Essays Before a Sonata appeared in 1920 as a companion to his Concord Sonata, explaining the literary and philosophical interests behind that large piano work. Its central chapters consider Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, the Alcotts, and Henry David Thoreau, the four figures associated with the sonata movements. Ives did not treat the volume as a conventional program note. He used it to ask how music can express character, ideas, memory, and spiritual independence while resisting fixed rules of taste. The Morgan Library preserves a copy connected with Ives presentation history, while the original Knickerbocker Press edition establishes its early publication context. His career was equally unconventional: he worked successfully in insurance while composing privately, and public recognition came late.
