Charles L. Harness combined science fiction with practical knowledge from his career as a patent attorney. The Professional Approach, written with fellow lawyer and science-fiction author Theodore L. Thomas, follows patent specialist Carl Saddle as he evaluates an apparently remarkable tearproof paper. Technical enthusiasm and professional confidence obscure a simple vulnerability, turning the invention into a comic lesson about evidence, judgment, and the facts experts overlook. The story first appeared in the September 1962 issue of Analog under the shared pseudonym Leonard Lockhard, which Thomas used for a sequence of patent-attorney satires. Project Gutenberg published a digital edition in 2007 and credits John Schoenherr as illustrator. Harness wrote novels and short fiction across a long career, but this collaboration draws unusually directly on legal work. Its science-fiction premise is modest rather than cosmic: innovation enters through a material claim, and the drama comes from the gap between what a patent can describe and what a product can survive.
