Charles West Thomson pursued poetry, Episcopal ministry, teaching, and law within the cultural world of nineteenth-century Philadelphia. The Sylph belongs to his early poetry, a body of work that also included The Limner, The Phantom Barge, Eleanor, and Love of Home. Thomson studied law and was admitted to the bar, but his career moved through teaching and public employment before he entered the ministry. He later served Episcopal congregations in Pennsylvania and continued writing across those changes in vocation. His literary life also intersected with Edgar Allan Poe, with whom he corresponded and whose work he discussed in print. The Sylph reflects the romantic and lyrical interests of Thomson's generation, when poems circulated through individual volumes as well as periodicals.
