Clay Maccauley served as an American Unitarian minister, educator, and writer whose career unfolded across American and Japanese settings. After theological study and pastoral work, he moved to Japan in the 1880s and became active in religious education, public lecturing, and English-language scholarship. A Straightforward Tale appeared in 1899 through the Anti-Imperialist League during debate over the Philippine-American War. The short political tract argues against official accounts of the conflict and assigns responsibility for hostilities to the American administration. Maccauley also wrote on Japanese language, literature, religion, and international affairs, including Japanese Literature, An Introductory Course in Japanese, and The Hohenzollern Dynasty.
