Coulson Kernahan produced novels, essays, memoirs, and editorial work across the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Fleming H. Revell brought out A World Without a Child in 1905. Its fuller subtitle was A Story for Women and for Men, and contemporary editions run to about sixty-four pages. The work uses an imagined absence of children to reflect on family, marriage, social continuity, and the place of childhood in communal life. It was also associated with Kernahan’s 1905 collection Visions, which gathered several of his moral and religious stories. His broader bibliography ranges from uncanny fiction and literary reminiscence to studies of poets and personal accounts of figures he knew. That variety reflects a writer comfortable with allegory as well as conventional narrative. A World Without a Child belongs to the didactic side of his work, building its argument through a speculative premise rather than through documentary exposition. The full subtitle is necessary context for recognizing its intended audience and form.
