David Gallop

David Gallop built a scholarly career translating ancient philosophy, and his work makes difficult Greek texts accessible without separating translation from argument. Parmenides of Elea presents the surviving fragments of Parmenides in Greek with a facing page English translation, an introduction, explanatory notes, a bibliography, and an index. University of Toronto Press published the volume in its Phoenix series, first in 1984, with a later paperback edition in 1991. Gallop frames the fragments as parts of a lost philosophical poem concerned with truth, being, appearance, and the structure of the cosmos. Because only portions survive through quotations by later writers, Gallop explains how the fragments fit together while marking the remaining gaps. Gallop also wrote on Plato, Aristotle, sleep, dreams, and ancient theories of mind.
