David Gallop built a scholarly career translating ancient philosophy, and his work makes difficult Greek texts accessible without separating translation from argument. Parmenides of Elea presents the surviving fragments of Parmenides in Greek with a facing page English translation, an introduction, explanatory notes, a bibliography, and an index. University of Toronto Press published the volume in its Phoenix series, first in 1984, with a later paperback edition in 1991. Gallop frames the fragments as parts of a lost philosophical poem concerned with truth, being, appearance, and the structure of the cosmos.
