David Peck Todd

David Peck Todd worked as an astronomer who joined research with careful public scientific instruction. Amherst College records his role as professor and observatory director, and documents the eclipse expeditions he undertook with Mabel Loomis Todd. Instructions for Observing the Total Eclipse of the Sun belongs directly to that professional setting. A library catalogue dates the pamphlet to 1888, credits David P. Todd, identifies the Observatory as publisher, and describes fourteen pages with plates. The text prepared observers for the total eclipse of January 1, 1889, covering timing, recording location, making drawings, and photographing the corona. It asked participants to preserve notes and send observations to Todd at Amherst College Observatory. Rather than presenting eclipse watching as spectacle alone, the booklet shows Todd organizing observers into a coordinated scientific effort.
