Deirdre Martin

Deirdre Martin writes contemporary romance in which professional sport, hometown history, and old assumptions place pressure on new relationships. The Penalty Box belongs to her New York Blades sequence, although its action shifts from the league spotlight to the smaller community of Didsbury. Katie Fisher returns as a sociology professor with confidence she lacked at school, while former hockey star Paul van Dorn is rebuilding his life after repeated concussions ended his playing career. He now coaches young players and runs the bar that gives the novel its title. The 2006 Random House edition places this story within the New York Blades series. Martin uses Paul and Katie's shared past to reverse their former social positions without pretending that success erases embarrassment. The Penalty Box therefore combines sports romance with a second-chance structure, asking both characters to see beyond the identities their classmates assigned them years earlier.
