Democritus Junior is the pen name adopted by the English scholar and clergyman Robert Burton for The Anatomy of Melancholy. Its 1621 debut organizes an immense range of classical learning, medicine, philosophy, anecdote, and literature into three broad partitions covering causes, remedies, and particular forms of melancholy. Burton repeatedly revised and enlarged the book during his lifetime, with six editions appearing through the posthumous 1652 text. He studied and later served at Christ Church, Oxford, and used the persona of Democritus Junior to combine learned authority with satire and personal reflection. The pseudonym invokes the ancient philosopher Democritus while giving Burton freedom to address readers in a shifting, conversational voice. The Anatomy of Melancholy is neither a modern medical manual nor a conventional treatise. Its lasting interest lies in the way Burton assembles competing opinions, quotations, stories, and observations into an encyclopedic literary argument.
