Donald S. Whitney

Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life sets out Bible reading, prayer, fasting, silence and journaling as practices to be learned by repetition rather than experiences to be felt, and it has been standard in American evangelical seminaries since 1991. Whitney teaches at a Southern Baptist seminary in Louisville. The book is deliberately unromantic about formation, which puts it at an angle to the conversion-experience emphasis of the churches around it, and that is the reason it keeps being assigned.
