Doug Farren
Doug Farren writes science fiction informed by his experience with nuclear technology and his long interest in science-based speculation. Translight opens the Galactic Alliance series with Jay Kauffman, a mathematician whose continuum calculus makes Earth's first stardrive possible. The test reveals other intelligent life, but contact brings a condition: Earth must establish a united world government before receiving advanced technology. Kauffman's invention therefore becomes a source of political pressure and conflict rather than an uncomplicated breakthrough. The 2009 opening volume combines hard military science fiction with space opera on a broad interstellar scale. Farren served eleven years in the United States Navy as a nuclear propulsion operator and later worked as a database administrator at a nuclear power plant. The Galactic Alliance sequence continues with Chroniech, Honor Thy Enemy, Peacekeeper, and further volumes. Its technical reference manual also records the ideas and invented systems behind the series, reflecting Farren's interest in making the speculative machinery visible.
