E.E. Charlton-Trujillo

E.E. Charlton-Trujillo centers Fat Angie on a high-school student learning to define herself beyond ridicule and other people's expectations. Angie is grieving her sister's absence, struggling with strained family relationships, and trying to navigate school when KC Romance arrives with an unusual willingness to see her clearly. Basketball, friendship, first affection, and Angie's memories each shape the choices she makes. Candlewick released the story in 2013, and it received the Stonewall Book Award in children's and young fiction. Charlton-Trujillo later continued Angie's story in Fat Angie: Rebel Girl Revolution and Fat Angie: Homecoming, turning one protagonist's growth into a series. Fat Angie balances difficult experience with wit and resilience, allowing Angie's voice and decisions to drive the narrative. The book's recognition also reflects its place in young literature concerned with identity, belonging, and what follows when someone is treated as an outsider.
