Edmund John Kennedy was an Anglican chaplain whose service with the British Expeditionary Force supplied the firsthand material for With The Immortal Seventh Division. Assigned to the 20th Brigade, he accompanied the Seventh Division during the opening campaigns of the 1914 conflict and the fighting around Ypres. His account focuses on a chaplain’s daily work among officers and soldiers, including travel, worship, medical stations, exhaustion, and efforts to offer comfort under field conditions. Kennedy returned to England after about a year and prepared the memoir, but did not live to see its 1916 publication. Hodder and Stoughton issued the volume with a preface by the Bishop of Winchester, who stressed its directness and sympathy. Kennedy’s perspective differs from a later operational history because it remains close to immediate experience and pastoral responsibility. With The Immortal Seventh Division preserves that viewpoint, recording not only military movement but also the emotional and practical demands placed on a clergyman serving beside a mobile formation.
