Édouard Levé
Édouard Levé was a French writer, photographer, and visual artist whose books test the boundary between factual inventory and literary form. Autoportrait builds a self-portrait from hundreds of short declarative statements presented without a conventional chronology. Memories, preferences, habits, travel, art, bodily experience, and political opinions accumulate through juxtaposition, leaving the reader to infer patterns that the narrator does not explain. Dalkey Archive Press published Lorin Stein's English translation of the French work. Levé used comparable procedures in his visual projects, including series based on reconstructed dreams and names borrowed from well-known places. That conceptual background helps explain why Autoportrait treats selection and arrangement as creative acts even while presenting its sentences as facts.
