Edward Achorn combines close archival work with scene-driven accounts of nineteenth-century public life in his journalism and historical nonfiction. A longtime editor at the Providence Journal, he became a Pulitzer Prize finalist for commentary and received the Yankee Quill Award. His books include Every Drop of Blood, a study of Abraham Lincoln’s second inauguration, and two histories connecting early baseball with American culture. The Lincoln Miracle examines the Republican National Convention held in Chicago in May 1860. Published by Atlantic Monthly Press in 2023, it follows the delegates, organizers, editors, and political managers whose decisions produced Lincoln’s unexpected nomination over better-known rivals. Achorn reconstructs the convention day by day, using eyewitness material to show how strategy, crowd organization, negotiation, and Lincoln’s own judgment interacted. The Lincoln Miracle fits his broader method of narrowing a large national story to a short, consequential interval, then recovering the individual voices and practical manoeuvres that made its outcome possible.
