Author: Edward P. Lowry
Edward P. Lowry, who published as the Rev. E. P. Lowry, was a British Wesleyan Methodist minister who served as Senior Wesleyan Chaplain with the South African Field Force through the war of 1899 to 1902. He attached himself to the Guards' Brigade at the Orange River and was present at Belmont, Graspan, Modder River and Magersfontein before the advance on Bloemfontein and Pretoria. His dispatches home ran as letters in The Methodist Recorder, The Methodist Times and other papers; the earlier part of that series became his own book Chaplains in Khaki, and further selections were used in W. E. Sellers's From Aldershot to Pretoria. He finished the present narrative at Pretoria in March 1902, checking his figures against Conan Doyle's The Great Boer War and other published accounts.
