Elsa Hart
Elsa Hart writes historical mysteries in which intellectual curiosity can be as dangerous as political ambition. The Cabinets of Barnaby Mayne, published by Minotaur Books in 2020, opens a series centered on Cecily Kay, a botanically trained traveler newly arrived in London. In 1703, Cecily visits the renowned collector Barnaby Mayne to study plant specimens, but his killing draws her into a closed circle of scholars, dealers, and rivals. Hart uses the cabinet of curiosities as more than scenery: stones, shells, books, and botanical objects expose the period's unstable boundaries between science, status, and fraud. The novel won the Mary Higgins Clark Award. Hart's earlier Li Du trilogy follows an exiled librarian investigating crimes in eighteenth-century China, beginning with Jade Dragon Mountain. Raised partly in Moscow and Prague, she has described an interest in travelers entering unfamiliar societies. The Cabinets of Barnaby Mayne transfers that outsider perspective to Queen Anne's London, where Cecily's attention to plants becomes a disciplined way of reading people and clues.
