Esau McCaulley

Esau McCaulley is a biblical scholar, Episcopal priest, and public writer whose work connects New Testament interpretation with questions arising in Black church communities. Reading While Black develops an approach to Scripture grounded in that tradition and attentive to justice, policing, political participation, anger, and hope. InterVarsity Press gives the book the subtitle African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope. McCaulley combines close readings of biblical passages with historical and pastoral reflection, arguing that the interpretive practices of Black Christians belong within serious theological scholarship. His later books extend that range into memoir and writing for children, while his essays address religion and public life for general readers.
