Fitzroy Maclean

Fitzroy Maclean was a Scottish diplomat, soldier, politician, and travel writer whose firsthand experience of the Soviet Union and wartime Yugoslavia informed a broader interest in contested regions. A Person from England, first published by Jonathan Cape in 1958, turns from Maclean's own journeys to the nineteenth-century travelers who entered the Central Asian khanates during the rivalry later called the Great Game. The book follows military officers, correspondents, missionaries, and other adventurers through places including Bokhara, Khiva, Merv, and Samarkand, reconstructing their motives and ordeals from historical accounts. Bloomsbury Reader later returned the work to print, preserving its combination of biography, travel history, and narrative momentum. Maclean is also known for Eastern Approaches, his memoir of diplomacy and irregular warfare. A Person from England complements that celebrated volume by showing how his fascination with Central Asia extended beyond autobiography to the earlier figures whose difficult journeys shaped Western knowledge of the region.
