Frank Frost Abbott was a classical scholar who taught Latin at Princeton and wrote for readers interested in history as well as philology. The Common People of Ancient Rome, first published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1911, collects studies of language, work, entertainment, trade, politics, and municipal life beyond Rome's ruling elite. Abbott asks how spoken Latin spread, how everyday verse and popular stories circulated, and how bakers, builders, farmers, merchants, soldiers, and benefactors supported the Roman world. His chapters move between inscriptions, literary evidence, rules, and comparisons with conditions familiar to contemporary readers. That method makes the book a companion to his Society and Politics in Ancient Rome while giving occupations and informal culture more space.
